On the 17th and 18th October through The Bluecoat Display Centre I ran a short hand building workshop in Belle Vale Millennium Centre with The Avenue Project. The group were very welcoming and responsive and I felt at ease straight away.
Working in terracotta clay the group were shown how to make pinch pots and then by joining how to turn them into a vessel. There was chance to experiment with applying texture and marks to the vessels and it was fantastic to see how everyone responded creating a wide range of finished pieces
On the second day we were making slab pots. Having prepared the clay and had chance to try a few techniques on day one, everyone arrived full of ideas even bringing their own mark making tools. After demonstrating how to construct different shaped slab pots everyone was ready to create their templates and begin construction. Again a broad range of work emerged, cylinders, triangles, ovals, squares all individually decorated some using names, pen lids, screws and leaves.
Throughout the two days I was delighted that everyone involved was keen to experiment with their ideas and try suggestions made. There was a genuine interest in the ceramic process with many questions asked and hopefully answered!
The work has now all been fired and has been transformed from dark chocolatey mud to warm orange terracotta.
